Mateo didn’t need to be treated like one of the bait dogs. Probably asking too much in his line of business, right? Maybe if he had a normal job…but who the hell would hire him? He could barely read. And his handwriting sucked. Guys like him didn’t fill out applications. They took whatever jobs they could get, and really, he shouldn’t have been complaining. Gillette didn’t make things easy, but the pay, which he got in cash, made up for the second-rate treatment. Besides, he had thick skin. Why let it get to him?

Gillette’s mood was foul. What the fuck? For a guy who’d just gotten out of the slammer, he should’ve been living la vida loca, and not jumping on Mateo’s ass for every little thing. He didn’t know much about Gillette or his problems. J.V. had gotten him this gig. But things were less tense before Gillette arrived. Now, he dreaded coming to work.

Oh well, he didn’t plan to make a career out of this. He might’ve been a loser, but he wasn’t heartless. The shit that went on around here got to him. No animal deserved to die like this. Sometimes he felt like opening all the cages and letting the poor bastards escape. But he wasn’t that stupid--he’d pay the price with his own life.

One thing for sure, he didn’t want to get in any deeper with these dudes. And as soon as he got another hook-up he would drop these losers. He’d already put out the feelers. Hopefully, one of his boys would come through with something soon.

Looking around the barn, Mateo felt pity for the helpless captives. He could see it in their eyes; these dogs knew their fate. End of the line for them. Bad enough they faced a nasty death. Did Gillette have to starve them, too? At least give them something to drink. It was fucking frying outside.

He knew if he got caught…Mateo went to each cage and gave the animals water. He’d delivered them to this death. And yes, a part of him felt guilty about it. Some of the animals were too frightened to come near him. Others were so parched they didn’t care.

Their days were numbered. They only served one purpose. Gillette’s pit bulls were finely tuned killing machines. He kept them that way through round-the-clock training. Bait dogs were usually put to use within seventy-two hours, which for him meant a never-ending job of restocking those cages.

He reached the last pen, where he’d put a tri-color Beagle he’d picked up just yesterday. He almost hadn’t stolen this one, but didn’t want Gillette to tear him a new asshole. Mateo had a quota to meet, and that was that. He opened the cage, crawled inside. The Beagle watched him, her tail tucked between her legs, a low growl rumbling from her throat.

“It’s okay, girl.” He squatted, let the dog know she didn’t have to be afraid. “I’m not gonna hurt you,” he said, in an unthreatening tone. “Drink.
